The problem
A narrow strip of ground between the house and the property line, doing nothing. The back door opened onto it and everyone walked straight past to get somewhere else.
What we did
We laid a paver patio across the full width, held one edge with a curved seating wall in tumbled stone, and set a gas fire pit into the centre of it. A hardtop gazebo covers the section nearest the house so the space works in rain as well as sun.
Base preparation took longer than the paving itself. Between two houses with gutters on both sides, getting the falls right was what mattered most — the patio sheds water rather than holding it.
The result
An outdoor room the owners use year-round, with lighting run in at the same time so it works after dark. Three weeks on site.
