River-rock dry creek bed with bluestone stepping stones running beside a brick house down toward Lake Norman

The problem

Water coming off the roof and down the slope ran along the side of the house towards the lake, taking soil and mulch with it. Nothing would establish along that run, and the path down to the dock washed out after every heavy rain.

What we did

We cut a channel along the natural fall and built it out as a dry creek bed — graded stone sized so it holds under fast water, not decorative pebble that floats away. Bluestone steppers set into the run give a proper path down to the fence line.

The bed does the work of a buried drain while staying visible, which on a slope like this is an advantage: you can see it running in a storm and see that it is clear.

The result

Runoff now leaves the property where it should, the path is usable in any weather, and nothing has moved since. Ten days on site.
